Kaminis worried about anti-fascist rally near Golden Dawn event

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis expressed fear on Friday about the proximity of an anti-fascist rally and a Golden Dawn supporters’ gathering that are due to take place near the city center on Saturday, warning that he would not allow other such events to take place.
An anti-fascist group is planning to start a rally at Victoria Square from noon Saturday. Protesters will march to Aghios Panteleimonas Square, where Golden Dawn had built up support in the past with attacks on migrants.
At 6 p.m., Golden Dawn supporters are due to gather outside the party’s offices near Larissis Station, which is less than a kilometer from Aghios Paneteleimonas, to protest the arrests of neofasicst leader Nikos Michaloliakos and some of the group’s MPs.
“If the square continues to be used in a battle of symbols, I will be obliged not to allow events to take place there in the future,” Kaminis said of the anti-fascist event, noting that Golden Dawn had asked for permission for its gathering earlier.
