Bulgaria disagrees with ‘Northern Macedonia’

The Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, cited by Dnevnik, stated that Bulgaria did not agree about the inclusion of geographical concepts in name of FYROM.
In his opinion, a name like that was completely ‘unacceptable’ because from a geographical point of view, some parts of Bulgaria fell under this concept. According to Borissov, a name like that was a prerequisite for territorial claims of FYROM towards Bulgarian lands.
Furthermore, the Bulgarian PM stressed: ‘I said that we would not accept it, because following this logic, tomorrow they might say that Blagoevgrad, a South-western Bulgarian city, belonged to FYROM’.
Dnevnik said that in 2008, because of the name dispute of FYROM, Greece blocked the country's accession to NATO and vetoed the negotiations for accession to the EU the year after. Athens continues to hamper the negotiations with Brussels, despite the reiterated recommendations of the European Commission for commencement of talks on this issue.
