Swoboda: Greece presidency unacceptable unless Athens puts a stop to unacceptable behaviour

Austrian MEP Hannes Swoboda, who heads the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament, suggested that Greece might have to forgot taking over the EU presidency in January if it fails to deal with its extreme right problem. The statement came in the wake of the murder of an anti-fascist raper and activist by a self-confessed neo-Nazi Golden Dawn supporter.
“It is crucial that the Greek government and Parliament draw clear conclusions and come up with solid proposals on how to stop these violent extremist attacks, including the possibility of banning the [Golden Dawn] party altogether,” he said.
“If the Greek government and Prime Minister Samaras fail to put a stop to the hate-filled behavior of Golden Dawn and other fascist groups, it will be an unacceptable presidency and not likely to bring any progress, either for Europe or for Greece,” added Swoboda.
Pavlos Fyssas also known a Killlerp, was murdered after his group of ten friends became the target of an attack by around 50 black-clad men in Amfiali, an Athenian suburb, on Tuesday night a they were leaving a cafe where they were watching the football.
His murderer was arrested nearby and confessed that he killed Fyssas as well as that he attended Golden Dawn meetings up to 10 times a month.
Golden Dawn, until last year a marginal party of extremists that profess admiration for Hitler and consider all immigration to Greece illegal, entered the Greek parliament in the May 2012 election. It consistently polls third in opinion polls and has seen its share of prospective voters nearly double since the last election.
It has been accused of launching attacks against immigrants and its spokesman Ilias Kassidiaris made headlines around the world last year after he slapped live on television a Communist MP with whom he disagreed.
Thousands of people demontrated on Wednesday in protest at Fussas' death while clashes took place between demonstrators and the police who used tear gas.     new europe
