October 28 was another historic day for the Greek community and the Greek School of Plato, in Brooklyn, New York. Not only did the school come together in honor of the heroism exhibited in that fateful morning of October 28, 1940, when Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas responded in one unifying and immortal word “OXI” to the surrender of Greece to the mighty Axis powers, but the Board of Directors and the President Vasilios Danas invited alumnus and legal counsel, Mr. Kyriako Tzanides, on stage to make an unprecedented announcement: Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Geroulanos, who have been long standing members and Lifetime Board members of the Greek School of Plato and whose sons, Mr. Spiro Geroulanos and Mr. John Geroulanos, are currently serving on the Executive Board, announced their intention of making a $1,000,000 donation to be used for the construction of a state of the art Greek School and Brooklyn’s first Hellenic Cultural and Community Center at the newly purchased property, located at 670 92nd Street.

The announcement sparked an immediate outburst of emotion followed by a standing ovation by everyone in attendance and there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience. Everyone understood what this gift represented, the continuation of a dream that was shared by so many dating back to its humble beginnings in 1977. “The Greek School of Plato has endured and through the generosity of this wonderful family will continue to endure for generations to come,” said the Board President Vasilios Danas. “I would like on behalf of the Board of Directors to thank Mr. and Mrs. Geroulanos and family and promise to continue the proud work of the founders and Board members that came before us.”
